Baby registry on Odoo: a guide for retailers
You run your baby store, gift shop or home decor boutique on Odoo, and customers keep asking: "Do you do baby registries?" Here is what Odoo can do out of the box, what it's missing, and the three realistic ways to get there depending on how your Odoo is hosted.
Why baby registries matter for a store
A baby registry is not like any other sale. A single customer (the expecting parent, or the couple) brings their whole circle into your store, online or in person: grandparents, colleagues, friends. These are people who didn't know you and who will buy from you because the registry lives with you.
It's also a sale that unfolds over several weeks, with high-value items (stroller, car seat, nursery furniture) that people rarely buy alone. Handled well, a registry builds loyalty with the whole family long after the birth. Handled badly (duplicate gifts, an item out of stock the day a godmother wants to buy it, a spreadsheet to keep up to date), it mostly costs time at the counter.
That's why the same question comes up with every retailer who moves to Odoo: how do I run registries without leaving the tool that already holds my catalog, my stock and my point of sale?
What Odoo offers out of the box: the wishlist
Odoo eCommerce includes a wishlist: a logged-in customer clicks the heart on a product to save it for later. Useful, but it's not a baby registry.
| What a baby registry needs | Standard Odoo wishlist |
|---|---|
| Share the list with family and friends | No: the list is tied to the customer's account, for them only. |
| See what has already been bought | No: no "bought / still needed" tracking. |
| Prevent duplicate gifts | No: nothing stops two people buying the same item. |
| Several people chipping in for a big gift | No: no partial contributions or group fund. |
| Reserve stock for the registry | No: the item stays on sale to everyone. |
| Registry tracking for the store | No: no registry view on the seller side. |
In other words, the wishlist is a reminder for the customer, not a sales tool for the store. For real registries, you need to add something to Odoo.
What a real baby registry requires
Before comparing solutions, agree on what you expect. These are the points we see come up again and again with baby stores:
- Self-service creation by the parents, from your Odoo catalog, on their phone, without coming to the counter for every change.
- A link to share (ideally with a QR code for the baby shower invitation) to a page in your brand colors.
- Stock reservation as soon as an item is added, so you don't sell it to someone else.
- Real-time status for each item: bought, partly funded, available.
- Group gifting: three colleagues pooling money for the stroller.
- Payments collected by the store, through your own payment methods, with no commission taken by a middleman.
- In-store pickup or grouped delivery, when the parents choose.
- Everything flows back into Odoo: orders, customers, invoices, accounting. No double entry.
If a solution doesn't cover stock reservation and tracking inside Odoo, you will likely end up keeping a second file on the side, which is exactly what you wanted to avoid by moving to Odoo.
3 options for a store on Odoo
Option 1: the workaround (wishlist, spreadsheet, quotations)
Many stores start this way: the parents make their selection in store, a staff member records it in a spreadsheet or an Odoo quotation, and family members call or drop by to find out what's left. It's free and immediate. But everything depends on the person at the counter, relatives can't buy online at 10 pm, and duplicates appear as soon as the list gets passed around.
Option 2: a module from the Odoo App Store
The Odoo App Store lists "gift registry" and shareable wishlist modules built by third-party vendors. They install into your database and add the missing features. Two things to watch:
- they can only be installed on Odoo.sh or on self-hosted Odoo (yours or your partner's), not on Odoo Online;
- every Odoo version upgrade (for example from 18 to 19) requires the module to be ported and tested. Check the supported version and the vendor's track record before buying.
Option 3: a registry app connected to Odoo
Here, the registry tool runs alongside Odoo and talks to your database through the official API: it reads the catalog and stock, and creates reservations, orders and payments in Odoo. This is how Wishlia works. The main advantage: nothing to install in Odoo, so it works with Odoo Online, and there's no module to migrate with every new version.
| Workaround | App Store module | Connected app (e.g. Wishlia) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Odoo Online | Yes | No | Yes, with the Custom plan |
| Odoo.sh / self-hosted | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Shareable online registry | No | Depends on the module | Yes, in your branding |
| Stock reservation | Manual | Depends on the module | Automatic |
| Group gifting | No | Depends on the module | Yes (group fund) |
| Odoo upgrades | No impact | Module must be migrated | No impact on your database |
| Cost | Staff time | License + integration | Monthly subscription |
The Odoo Online case: what nobody tells you upfront
Most small stores start on Odoo Online, the version hosted by Odoo, because it's simple and there's no server to manage. It's a very good choice, with one trade-off that rarely gets mentioned when you sign up: you can't install third-party modules that contain server-side code. Most gift registry modules on the App Store are therefore out of reach.
What's left is an external app connected through the API. According to Odoo's pricing page, External API access (external software that calls Odoo via XML-RPC or JSON-RPC) is included in the Custom plan, not in the Standard plan.
If you're on the Standard plan today, moving to Custom costs extra per user. Do the math first: compare that yearly cost with the revenue your registries bring in. For a store that only opens one or two registries a year, the workaround may well be enough, and we'd rather tell you so.
If you're already on Odoo.sh or on Odoo hosted by a partner, you can choose between options 2 and 3: compare long-term maintenance more than the purchase price.
Launching your baby registries: checklist
Whatever the tool, it's often the house rules that win parents over. Decide these before you open the first registry:
- Registry duration. How long does it stay open: until the birth, two months after?
- Gift pickup. As gifts come in, or all at once when the parents are ready? Reserved stock has to stay on the shelf or in the back room until then.
- Completion perk. Many stores offer a discount on remaining items when the registry closes: a strong argument against the online registries of big retailers.
- Exchanges and returns. What if the parents receive two footmuffs? Store credit rather than a refund keeps the sale with you.
- Visibility. A poster at the till, a mention on your website and a QR code on the invitation: a registry nobody sees is a registry nobody uses.
What setup looks like with Wishlia
To make option 3 concrete: we connect Wishlia to your Odoo database, your catalog and stock sync, and your customers create their registries on a page in your branding. Family and friends buy an item outright or chip in to a group fund, payment goes through the payment providers configured in your Odoo, and you find orders, reservations and customers right inside Odoo. You can try the demo to see what parents see.
FAQ
Does Odoo have a built-in baby registry module?
No. Odoo eCommerce offers a personal wishlist, but not a shareable baby registry with gift reservation, group contributions or store-side tracking. You need either a third-party module (Odoo.sh or self-hosted) or an external app connected through the Odoo API.
Can I install a baby registry module on Odoo Online?
Not a third-party module containing Python code: Odoo Online does not allow installing App Store modules that add server-side logic. On Odoo Online, the solution is an external app connected to your database through the Odoo API, which requires the Custom plan.
Which Odoo plan do I need to connect a gift registry app?
An external app that calls the Odoo API (XML-RPC or JSON-RPC) counts as "External API" usage, which is included in Odoo's Custom plan. The Standard plan does not include it.
Is stock reserved when an item is added to a registry?
Not with Odoo's standard wishlist. With a dedicated solution like Wishlia, adding an item to a registry reserves the matching stock in Odoo, which prevents stock-outs and duplicate gifts.
Do registry payments go straight to the store?
With Wishlia, yes: friends and family pay through the payment providers already configured in your Odoo, and the money lands in the store's account, with no marketplace commission.
